Avoiding Self Absorption in Poker

Several new players often remark on how difficult Poker seems to be, with so many things to try and focus on. This is partly true, but part of the problem is actually caused by the players themselves who are often too concentrated on their own game.

Becoming too self absorbed in Poker is very common and manifests itself in many different ways. One of the most frequent is when a player looks only at his hands. There is no question that you should be aware of where you stand in the game, but quite often players become so engrossed in their hands that they just ignore what is going on with the other players.

If you lose focus on what the other players are doing on the Poker table, you may not realize that the other players are giving off tells that they are holding a much superior hand to what you currently have. This can cause you to lose the game.

Another manifestation of being too self absorbed can be seen in players who expect the other individuals to play the same way that they do. This is something that players with good Poker skills will not expect. There is no reason to, because people have diverse skill levels, yet some players still expect their opponents to play hands like they do.

That is a dangerous assumption, and thinking like that, and including it in your Poker strategy, will spell disaster. You can never make assumptions in the game; that is why reading is so important. When you develop your Poker reading skills, you will be able to determine how the players play, instead of being surprised as to why they played this or that hand in that manner.

What every Poker player must realize, sooner than later, is that when you are playing in the game, you must always try to focus not just on your game, but also on what is happening around you. You will often hear the phrase "playing the players", and that is exactly what this is all about.

Everything you do in the game, and everything your opponents do, will have an effect on the outcome, so make sure you are trying tour best to determine what they are doing.

If you want to be a winning Poker player, you should always try to keep your eyes open to what is taking place around you. By knowing exactly what is going on, you will be able to profit from those who are still too self absorbed.
